歌舞伎とシェイクスピア上演の過去・現在・未来 第二弾

日本で最初にシェイクスピアの全作品を翻訳した坪内逍遙により設立された演劇博物館では、シェイクスピア研究の世界的拠点であるシェイクスピア研究所を擁するイギリスのバーミンガム大学と研究協力体制を築いてきました。早稲田大学演劇博物館 演劇映像学連携研究拠点が主催する本対談は、シェイクスピア劇と歌舞伎の上演における共通点や差異も踏まえながら、両国を代表する「古典」と呼ばれる演劇上演における過去・現在・未来をつなぐものであり、2023年11月1日に第1回目が開催され、今回が2回目となります。
本対談は上演という「残らないもの」にいかにアプローチし再現しうるかという点にフォーカスし、お互いの研究に資する情報交換を行うことで将来的な日英演劇比較研究の基盤作りを目指すために企画され、シェイクスピア劇と歌舞伎の上演における共通点や差異も踏まえながら、両国を代表する「古典」と呼ばれる演劇上演における過去・現在・未来をつなぐ議論が展開されました。

Kabuki and Shakespeare in Performance: Past, Present, and Future Part2
Project Overview
The Theatre Museum (founded by Tsubouchi Shoyo, the first person to translate the complete works of Shakespeare into Japanese) has built a collaborative research relationship with the University of Birmingham in the UK and its Shakespeare Institute, a global hub for Shakespeare studies. We hosted an online dialogue "Kabuki and Shakespeare in Performance:Past, Present, and Future", between Professor Tiffany Stern of the Shakespeare Institute, a specialist of Shakespeare and early modern drama, and Professor Kodama Ryuichi of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, Waseda University, a kabuki scholar who is also the Director of the Theatre Museum. The dialogue was held for linking the past,present and future in the performance of the ‘classics’ representing both countries based on the similarities and differences between Shakespeare’s plays and kabuki performances. The first dialogue was held on November 1, 2023, and this is the second one.
This dialogue, we focused on how we can approach and reproduce the performance that ‘do not remain’. Exchanging information that will contribute to research of each other, it aimed at laying the foundations for future comparative research on the UK and Japanese theatre culture. Taking into consideration of the similarities and differences, it also tried to link the past, present, and the future of Shakespeare’s and Kabuki performances, both of which are known as classics now, and represent each country.
The dialogue, which was not open to the public, is now available in English and Japanese on the official YouTube channel of the Theatre Museum.
