Encouragement Research Project
Fiscal 2021
In 2020, we embarked on “encouragement research,” wherein we conduct collaborative research with young scholars at the Theatre Museum. In 2022, six projects were adopted, and a variety of research was conducted.
Survey Research on the Images, Audio, and Video Materials of Jōruri Theater(Harada Masumi) Survey Research on Materials Related to Rakugo and Kodan Story-Telling Owned by the Theatre Museum: Focusing on Tanabe Koji’s Collection(Akai Kimi) Study on Japanese and British Female Playwrights and Translators: from the Mid-16th Century to the 21st Century(Ishibuchi Rieko) Survey research on the Materials Relating to Plays in Japan’s Small-sized Theaters and the Study of the Ways to Use Them: Focusing on Ohta Shogo and Sato Makoto(Kim Yun Jeong) Survey and Research on Foreign Film Brochures(Kawasaki Keiya) Basic Study on Sexual Representations in Japanese Cinema in the Twilight of the Studio System (Hatokai Mio)
A wide variety of materials from the Theatre Museum were investigated and examined in cooperation with researchers inside and outside the university. Some of the results were presented in the Theatre Museum’s Special Autumn Exhibition, “Words, words, words: Kazuko Matsuoka and Her Translation of Shakespeare’s Plays,” and the Autumn Exhibition, “Haruki Murakami Journey into Movies,” among others. The study result of (1) was widely introduced at the Kabuki Society Fall Conference 2022 and received this year’s Kabuki Society Encouragement Award in conjunction with the result in the Theatre Museum’s Spring Special Exhibition, “Hanji Chikamatsu: Genius jōruri author.”
