Encouragement Research Project

Fiscal 2020

Since fiscal year 2020, scholars at the Theatre Museum have been conducting a project at the Center, named as “Encouragement Research Project,” which is a survey of materials related to theater and film for the purpose of use in future joint research projects. In 2020, the first year the project was implemented, six research themes were selected:

  1. Survey and Study of Basic Materials of the Taikoki Drama in Early Modern Theatre: Focusing on ningyo joruri(Masumi Harada)
  2. Yoshi Hijikata’s Life in Moscow(Masaru Ito)
  3. Study of the Shinpa Theater during WWII Using a Survey of Materials Related to Yaeko Mizutani I(Ryuki Goto)
  4. Basic Research on the Representation of Sexual Minorities in the Japanese Film Industry: Production, Exhibition, and Interpretation(Yutaka Kubo)
  5. The Acceptance of The Peach Blossom Fan in Modern Japan: Focus on Tokyo Vocational School(Shikan Lee)
  6. The Exhibition of Films and Staging of Attractions at Shochikuza Theater Chain (Kotaro Shibata)

Through these projects, a wide variety of materials held by the Theatre Museum were examined. The fourth theme in particular led to an exhibition held during fiscal year 2020 at the Theatre Museum, and the third theme is scheduled to be part of an exhibition of related materials during the next fiscal year.
